Round One of comps for the Ben and Jerry's FroYo packaging! Keep in mind while commenting that these are single-serve portions and not full size containers. And there will not be any type on curves..that was my attempt to show some sort of dimension. I'm hoping the image quality isn't too bad, last time I had compression issues and fullsizing issues for the thumbs. The scriptive handwriting says "Jimmy Eat Swirl", that is one of the flavors. The other flavors will be very similar: they just use different colors to distinguish the flavors. I was also wondering if it wouldn't be too cheesy to write/caption the cow saying "Cowabunga". I almost can't help myself.
Please use the number system when critiquing so I understand which one you are commenting on! Ex: b1,b2,b3,a1,a2,a3

I wouldn't use that handwritten typeface for the flavor, it's hard to read, the J is really weird.
ReplyDeleteI like the B1 layout the most, the brand presence is there, the flavor name is easy to find. I think the striping of the wave is more interesting and it also ties into those frozen yogurt machines, the way the frozen yogurt looks when it comes out of the nozzle.
Maybe you should explain what B.Y.O.B stands for on the front of the container somewhere, perhaps directly under the acronym. That way it's clearer to the customer what it is since it's a play off of another acronym

As far as readability and things like that, I think A1 is working out the most. You probably should try and keep to a more readable typeface for the flavor. The cow surfing still isn't really working for me. Maybe you can actually try illustrating it. Also, I know this is a new line for B&J but maybe you can try sticking to their color scheme of blue, green and brown? Maybe also try a more fun, illustrated look since that is their style.
ReplyDeleteReally? I tried to keep the cow and logo the same to tie it to the brand, and make the surfing the whimsical element. Thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteI like B1 the best, but i think that it still needs some work. Overall it looks good, but I think the cow stills needs a little more expression/action and I am not reading the flavor very well, maybe a different typeface. I think that while I like the design, it seems to need to be punched up a little, more emphasis.
ReplyDeleteI am more inclined to the swirled designs in set B. I'm not particularly fond of the typeface you chose for the flavor though - it's not too legible. Try a font that works with either the B&J logo or the shape of the swirls. And the "BYOF" statement might be a bit of a blur to a customer so it would help if you could point it out in some sort of a subtle manner. For example, if you were to keep the BYOF icon the way it is in A2, you could probably get away with putting the spelled out words beneath it or possibly even along the top of the swirly shape.
ReplyDeleteI think the most successful one is B1. The swirls and bright colors really make the packaging fun to look at. I am not sure about having the B.Y.O.F in the corner like that, maybe have it below the logo or below the jimmy eat swirl. Overall, I love your design and I love the surfing cow, I kind of want to see a tongue sticking out of the cows mouth to show how much fun the cow is having.
ReplyDeleteok i like A2 the BYOF really stands out which is good as all the other packagings the logo and product name are way too small you cant tell what it is...if anything i think you should even go bigger. i like the solid swirl but i would like to see the slided swirls with the BYOF bigger! just to see what it looks like! other than that good job!!!!

B1 works the best currently; the stripe swirl is very eye catching. I agree with the above comments regarding the need for a different typeface for the flavor. The meaning behind B.Y.O.F should be integrated into its logo in a style similar to the FroYo subtitle of the main logo.
ReplyDeletei like the sizes on everything and the type on #1
ReplyDeletebut i like the layout of #3 and maybe bring the byo closer and over the flavor. i like the clean look on the bottom row it reminds me of candy canes or something any might mislead people into thinking thats the flavor? (i don't know what flavor it is)
I like the handwritten type rather than the typeface in a1, although it may have to be made larger for legibility.
ReplyDeletethe line/swirl design in the B column is working better than the solid and I think B2 has the best type placement.
have you considered any screened patterns for the background?
i'm liking B1..i like the white stripes through the wave. I also like the flavor name in the middle, but i think there may be a better way to handle it. some other kind of graphic treatment perhaps. it isnt consistent with their ice creams. make it more fun!!
ReplyDeleteI like 3B
ReplyDeletei like B1 it has a great strip wave and the view of the logo and the flavor is easy to spot. the layout of A1 is great too the hierarcy is more presented than the B1
ReplyDeleteso if you put together these equation: A1(-small logo - typed - swirl)+ B1(+ big logo + hand written + strip wave)= my suggestion. great job
B3 is my favorite. The handwritten type on the Bs could work because its more visible. I don't know if I prefer these because of the red stripes or because of the type on the white, so I would like to see this type on the white area on any A set. A1 could also work, because of the hierarchy.

The placement of the elements looks best in A1 because you have an established hierarchy. The type for the flavor in Row A has a lot more clarity than Row B. I like it scripted too but I think it's just the letter J that throws me off. Although I know it is not, I see it as Dimmy Eat Swirl.
ReplyDeleteOverall though, I like what you have so far.

I like the B row. The flavor type doesn't look like it goes with your brand... maybe it does, but I don't like how it looks. Maybe you can use a sans-serif type to contrast the logo.

A1, but perhaps have byof directly underneath b+J logo.
