Ben and Jerrys Thumbnails

The Basic Sketch

The Finished Sketch

I'm sorry the numbers are scattered, the bottom sketch is numbered to match the top sketches. Sometimes it's easier to see what something looks like package-wise before it has the design on it.

It was very important for me to design strictly cardboard to meet Ben and Jerry's eco-promise to their customers. I also needed a wider mouth to keep all your toppings inside the cup. These are individual sizes much like the smaller pints you see at the grocery store. I also needed to keep a basically rounded carton to make it easy to scoop with your spoon. And, true to their nature, I kept the designs whimsical. :)

The sketches are as follows:
1) The top is slightly sloped. The swirls make a "tidal wave" for the surfing cow.

2) Cow print lid, solid bottom.

3) Traditional carton with tear off strip

4) 8-sided carton with a construction sort of theme. Black lid. White background.

5) Beveled top, circles contain different information and elements.

6) 6-sided carton that would be insane to comp but super fun! Side "panels" have enlarged fruit. The middle panel has the classic Ben and Jerry's cow.

  1. I like all of them. The designs are fun and the arrangement of the elements are not too cluttered either. Overall, looks great. =)

  2. Your designs look great. I like them all. All I got to say, do them all. I'm excited to see them done. They look interesting. I know some of them look a little complicate to make, but you can dot it girl.

  3. I Like the first design. It's simple and fun. It doesn't have corners which are harder to get ice cream out of. The others are needlessly complicated.

  4. No.4 looks neat! I think that the grip on that packaging would be easier than the smooth round surface of the other packages.
I like the tidal wave design. It looks organic - so then I associate the package with the product inside of it.

  5. These are so cute! Hard to decide... I would go with #4? the octagon (8-sided structure), black lid and white structure. The black spots of a cow skin work very well to create the playful mood of a special treat, I would definitely use them for graphics.

  6. i like the top far right and far left the best.

Right: has a nice feel and keeps with the brand identity by using the cow and covering part of it with the information.

Left: design wise i thinks works very well because it has a nice flow to it.

  7. ok as far as labels i like number 2 it's very clean and still links the original "logo/brand identity" of the company. as far as packaging to be honest im not really like any so far. i think maybe try to be more experimental with the "box" concept try something "out their" make it differ from the current packaging.

  8. I like the ruffled top with the pull-off lid. if you made it get more narrow at the bottom it might be easier to stack them without crushing the ruffled edge, and perhaps easier to hold and eat as well.
